Penny Daniels has left her job as co-anchor for KHQ-6, the station announced Friday. Her last newscast aired Wednesday.

According to KHQ, Daniels requested to be released from her contract with the station.

Daniels was traveling and could not be reached for comment.

KHQ general manager Lon Lee said Daniels ”did not want to do the big goodbye on the air” during her last broadcast.

“She was not fired,” he noted.

Daniels joined Spokane’s NBC affiliate in April of 1998 after working in New York City as a free-lance anchor and reporter. From 1994 to 1996, she worked as an anchor for “A Current Affair.”

She moved to Spokane from Manhattan for “a slower pace and a more family-oriented environment” to raise her two daughters, she said before arriving here.

Daniels has been active in the community, giving speeches before professional groups and at schools. She also has been active in the arts, playing the role of a newscaster in a Civic Theatre sci-fi spoof of “The Tempest” and narrating “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” at a Spokane Symphony pops concert.
