KXLY goes digital
By Jim Kershner
The station has been promoting this for weeks, but in reality the move is mostly symbolic. The HDTV signal is being broadcast only on a low-power transmitter from the studio, which reaches “most of the downtown Spokane area.” And even if you can pick it up, it won’t do you any good unless you have a $7,000 HDTV set.
KXLY engineers say it is “more of a test” at this point. KXLY’s full-power digital signal won’t go on the air until late summer.
All of Spokane’s TV stations are scrambling to fully convert to a digital signal by the year 2002. You’ll be hearing more about this – a lot more.
