Penny Daniels, KHQ’s new co-anchor, arrives Monday, bringing plenty of big-market experience with her.

And when we say big market, we mean the biggest market.

Daniels was most recently a free-lance anchor and reporter at WNYW-TV, New York City’s Fox affiliate, and a free-lance reporter at WWOR-TV, New York’s UPN affiliate. From 1994 to 1996, she was an anchor and correspondent for “A Current Affair,” based in New York. Before that, she was an anchor-reporter at major stations in Chicago, Miami and Washington, D.C.

So why would she want to come to the 75th largest TV market in the country?

“A lot of personal reasons,” said Daniels by phone from her home in Manhattan. “Mainly, I really wanted a slower pace and a more family-oriented environment to raise my daughters (7 and 2). They deserve a back yard to run around in and a family room.”

Her oldest daughter is her biological daughter; the youngest is adopted from Colombia. Daniels said she has been longing for a “more realistic living environment” for years.

Patricia Clemm-McRae, KHQ’s news director, is an old colleague of hers from Miami.

When this job came up, Daniels flew out to Spokane and liked what she saw. Daniels replaces Debra Wilde, who is developing a daily noon talk program which will debut in July. Daniels will co-anchor with Randy Shaw at 5 and 6 p.m.

Daniels called herself a “news nomad” who has worked in six different cities. “I’d like to stop now,” she said. “I’ve made a major, major commitment to this community.”

She’s a 1977 graduate of the University of Michigan, and she earned a master’s in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University in 1980.

Daniels will most likely be introduced on Monday and begin her anchoring duties on Tuesday. She will be commuting back and forth to New York until the end of the school year, when she and her daughters will make the move.
