KAYU-TV, Channel 28 in Spokane, has arranged to carry a variety of Seattle Seahawks programming that may include the preseason games of the National Football League club.
Seahawk preseason games not broadcast by national networks have never been televised outside the Seattle area due to “an unwritten law” among NFL teams, Seahawk president and general manager Mike McCormack said Friday.
However, when informed that non-network preseason games have been broadcast outside the immediate area of at least two NFL teams (Pittsburgh and Minnesota) for years, McCormack said he was unaware of the fact. He immediate phoned at least one of the flagship stations, WTAE in Pittsburgh.
McCormack said the information about Pittsburgh and Minnesota, uncovered by KAYU sports coordinator Tod Pickett, “gives us some ammunition, because we’ve had a lot of interest and a lot of complaints that we can’t televise those games. We’re interested, because we’re kind of a Northwest team.
McCormack said he had already begun looking into the possibility of airing delayed broadcasts of non-network preseason games outside the Seattle area. McCormack said “there is some confusion” about whether the NFL would allow such broadcasts.
A spokesman for the NFL office in New York said Val Pinchbeck, broadcasting coordinator for the league, was out of town and could not be reached for comment.
None of Seattle’s four preseason games this fall are scheduled on network television. Bob Hamacher, president and general manager of KAYU, said his station would prefer carrying the live broadcasts of the preseason games “bout would be happy” to offer the games on a delayed basis.
KING-TV of Seattle, has agreed to provide the Seahawks’ preseason games to KAYU if the NFL and the Seahawks approve. Other Seahawk programs that KING will provide KAYU include a season preview special, a weekly magazine-type show and training camp reports that will air nightly or weekly.
KING is not involved with “The Steve Largent Show,” a new weekly program on KAYU that will feature the star Seahawk receiver
