Carl Clark, co-anchor of KHQ-TV News the past 6 ½ years, has accepted a job offer as anchor for a television station in South Carolina.

Dean Mell, KHQ news director, said Clark will be replaced as of Oct. 22 by Randy Shaw, who currently is KHQ’s assignment editor.

Clark, 50, will begin work Nov. 7 for WYFF-TV in Greenville, S.C., the nation’s 38th-largest television market.

Although Clark says he likes Spokane and KHQ, he has said that the only reason he’s stayed with the station this long is because he wasn’t able to find a better job.

“They’ve been exceedingly good to us at KHQ, but when the time comes you have to be ready to go,” Clark said Wednesday. “They (the Greenville station) made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

Clark, born in Yakima, graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla before doing some graduate work at Yale.

He spent 10 years in New York City, part of the time as a journalist and part of the time as a stage actor. Later, he worked for radio and television stations in Yakima for eight years before coming to Spokane to co-anchor the KHQ news with Nancy Goodspeed.

“We love Spokane and it’s real hard to leave,” Clark said. “But if you’re going to have a career, you have to go where the opportunities are.”

Mell said Clark has given “strength” and “stability” to the evening news during his years with the station, but said Shaw will be a good replacement.

“Randy’s background is probably more broad in a news sense,” Mell said. “He’s had experience as a producer, a news director and as an anchor.”

Several years ago, Shaw, 36, who is from Spokane, anchored at KXLY-TV here for a short time, Mell said.

“Randy will be providing us with mature and skillful reporting, as Carl has done,” Mell said.
