Spokane’s newest commercial television station, KAYU-TV, which had a ground-breaking ceremony for its new building yesterday at S4600 Regal, will broadcast from temporary headquarters at E3210 Sprague until the new facilities are finished next June.

Broadcasting on UHF Channel 28, the new station hopes to be on the air by Oct. 17. Robert J. Hamacher, president and general manager, said KAYU-TV will also be carried on Channel 8 over Cox Cable.

KAYU-TV’s normal broadcasting range will be about the same as Spokane’s other three commercial stations, Hamacher said. The new station is erecting its broadcasting tower on Krell (Tower) Mountain, southeast of the city.

As an independent station without network affiliation, the new TV station will carry a large number of syndicated programs and movies.

Every effort is being made to acquire “some topflight sporting events” for the Spokane-area audience, Hamacher said.

Prior to coming to Spokane, Hamacher, who was formerly with KREM-TV, was an executive with KSTW-TV Seattle-Tacoma, which is also an independent station (Cox Cable Channel 23) which has the emphasis on syndicated shows and movies, plus sports.

Hamacher said that the station will show “Rawhide” and “Bonanza” in the western vein, as well as “Twilight Zone” and “Hitchcock Presents” for those who like more exciting TV fare.

“We haven’t forgotten the many friends of Lawrence Welk and his show will be on for an hour on Sunday nights,” Hamacher said.

The “700 Club” will be broadcast Monday through Friday at 10 a.m., supplied by the Christian Broadcasting Network, the GM said.

There will be no local news when the station goes on the air, but there will be a 10 p.m. national and international newscast supplied by Independent News Network and received here via satellite, Hamacher said.
