Five hours of public tours will highlight the grand opening of the new KXLY Radio-Television Broadcast Center at W500 Boone Sunday, Wayne McNulty, general manager, announced Thursday.

Sunday’s open house tours, which will be conducted from noon to 5 p.m., will be the first in a series of nine weekly tour programs scheduled through Dec. 27, McNulty said.

Dedicated by Magnuson

The new studio facilities were dedicated Thursday when Sen. Warren G. Magnuson, D-Wash., spoke at ribbon-cutting ceremonies attended by more than 75 local and state officials.

Attending the dedication were Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Murphy, Superior, Wis., owners of the Morgan Murphy Group, which has ownership of the Spokane broadcasting firm.

McNulty said the station will have a special program of activities for children Saturday in the Coliseum parking lot. The day’s attractions will include a carnival with five major rides and amusements and ice skating in the Coliseum.

The new three-level structure is situated on a high promontory of lava rock and is directly across from the Coliseum east parking lot.

The building, which has 24,000 square feet of floor space, contains two studios designed exclusively for television and one studio for AM and FM radio programming. The station’s FM transmitter is being moved to the top of Mt. Spokane and is expected to begin operation from there early next month, McNulty said.

The new broadcasting complex was put in operation about six weeks ago when the station’s facilities were moved from the former location at W315 Sprague. Ownership is held by Spokane Radio, Inc. and Spokane Television, Inc. of which McNulty is both vice president and general manager.
