Television Line Snapped by Ice

January 11, 1955

Spokane Daily Chronicle

Extreme frost conditions and a terrific ice load caused the power line break on Mount Spokane which put KXLY-TV off the air for more than 10 hours yesterday, technicians at the Inland Power and Light Company said today.

A foreman in charge of crews which worked yesterday said the line snapped about 65 feet from where the feeder system goes underground. Another crew was on the job today to make an additional check of the wire system.

Service was restored last night at 11:28 p.m.

Two weeks ago an insulator, shattered by what was believed to have been a bullet from a high-powered rifle, knocked the station off the air for a short time. The KXLY-TV transmitter is at the top of the mountain.
